ELECTIONS AND MEDIA: HOW TO RESPOND TO NEW CHALLENGES?
How to give coverage to election process in media? Is this possible to do it objectively? What changes in legislation are indispensable? This issues gathered experts, politicians, diplomats and civil servants to the “Media and elections: challenges and probable solutions” international conference, having been taken place in Kiev early in April.
The event was organized by the Council of Europe with the support of the CE “Reform of the Electoral Practice inUkraine”, “Assistance to the Government of Ukraine to reform the Electoral Legislation and implement the Constitutional Reform” projects.
As Jan Tombiński, a head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine, stated during the conference:“Elector and citizen are not the same notions. Citizen is an educated elector. This is a man, who never sells his vote”, he said. Just this phenomenon the diplomat called one of the main problems in the Ukraine. And, as Holos Ukrayiny informs, mass media, according to his words, should struggle against it.
The main challenge of such a kind of events is to create functional and unofficious atmosphere, promoting professional discussion and informal communication among participants. The precision of the performance of tasks in hand and the well-coordinated team work on the part of event agency, which is the hallmark of Arena CS, are very important here.
