Responsible Consumption Through Green Events: How Businesses Become More Conscious

Does Ukraine need green events? Is sustainable event management truly relevant, or is it just another social media trend? Here is why ARENA CS began integrating responsible consumption principles into every project long before “sustainability” became a fashionable term.

1 sports event = a full day’s worth of waste produced by the city of Kremenets

Ten million events take place annually — and this is only within the MICE sector (meetings, conferences, exhibitions). Add concerts, sports competitions and entertainment events, and the number multiplies several times.

But within all this data, one figure matters most.

It may seem small, yet in the context of the global challenge it forces us to rethink how humanity operates.

1.34 kg

That is how much waste the average event attendee generates.

On its own, the number seems insignificant. But collectively, each event has a substantial environmental impact. For example:

A music festival with 20,000 visitors leaves behind around 22 tons of waste — the capacity of a large truck.

An exhibition with 30,000 attendees generates roughly 34 tons of waste — about three full garbage trucks

A football match with 80,000 fans produces nearly 90 tons of trash, equivalent to the daily waste output of a Ukrainian city with 20,000 residents, such as Kremenets in Ternopil region.

The bulk of event waste comes from single-use plastic: packaging, tableware, straws, bottles. Next are paper materials — posters, brochures, programs and other disposable informational products.

Where does this waste go? It largely depends on the event organizer, the country’s regulations, and waste sorting practices in the host city. In any case, recycling all waste is impossible, and claiming a minimal environmental footprint would be misleading. Moreover, in Ukraine, only 5% of all waste is recycled.

Fortunately, this problem can be addressed. Eco-friendly event management has already become standard practice for responsible companies.

Responsible Consumption Through Green Events

The consumption-driven era that shaped global markets since the 1980s taught us to behave as if resources are limitless. Today, this mindset is changing. For more than a decade, conscious consumption has been a global trend, and terms like “sustainable,” “zero waste,” and “circular economy” are widely recognized. Interestingly, the younger generation — Gen Z — also prioritizes experiences and emotions over material possessions.

Modern brands are adapting: investing in recycling, rentals and secondary markets. Zero-waste events are no longer a novelty. More businesses are asking: What is the environmental price of our actions?

At its core, responsible consumption is not about rejecting things, but about making mindful choices. For instance: you don’t have to give up your favorite take-away meal — but you can choose packaging that doesn’t generate additional plastic waste.

Eco-friendly event management follows the same logic: guests are not restricted. The goal is simply to eliminate the unnecessary — single-use plastics, excessive printed materials, and anything that will turn into waste before the event is even over.

What Do Green Events in Ukraine Look Like?

WATCH SHOWREEL

For ARENA CS, eco-friendly event organization begins with rejecting template thinking. Every event has its own environmental and social footprint — and we know how to measure, analyze and improve it. This approach has evolved into our Green Event Management Policy, a strategic direction guiding our development in the years ahead. It includes:

Digitalization instead of printing

programs, badges, surveys — all on mobile devices.

Eco-transport and local suppliers

to reduce carbon footprint.

Waste sorting and recycling

Eco-catering using local products

Reuse of banners and décor materials

And most importantly — education:

 every client receives guidance on how to make their event more sustainable

Green Checklist: Our Tool for Monitoring Eco-Efficiency

To ensure these principles turn into real action, we created the ARENA CS Green Checklist — an internal yet publicly accessible tool that measures the environmental impact of every event.

It tracks:

  • how much paper was saved;
  • what percentage of materials was recycled;
  • how much waste was properly processed;
  • який обсяг CO₂ вдалося скоротити.

These indicators help evaluate the effectiveness of eco-solutions for conferences and other events.

You can download the Green Checklist to learn how to make your own event more sustainable.

Responsibility as a Cultural Value

ARENA CS integrates international standards such as ISO 20121, UN SDGs, and GRI. For us, this is not a formality — it is a daily practice. We apply these principles across all areas: from educational initiatives at Great Event School to social support through the Women’s Aid International foundation.

Today every business faces a choice: create events that consume resources, or events that enrich society. ARENA CS consciously chooses the latter. Every Green Event we deliver is a contribution to a culture of responsibility.

We recognize that every event starts with your vision. Our role is to bring it to life — in a way that leaves a positive footprint. Working with us, you achieve your goals while becoming part of meaningful change. We create conditions where your event naturally aligns with sustainable values.

Responsible consumption is the new form of comfort. For us, it means transparency, respect for resources, and harmony with the world around us.
